We have kept a short diary of our progress in converting the historic barn into high quality accommodation.
We bought the property and moved into the adjacent cottage.
Planning permission was confirmed.
We started to clear the garden and building of years of overgrown trees, bushes and plants.
We Selected a local builder to undertake the conversion after seeing a superb previous conversion he had done. If ours reaches the same standard (which he has promised it will), we will be delighted.
We had the first site inspection from the building inspector to check against building regulations.
All was ok and we were given the go-ahead to start the conversion.
November & December
The ground works started like digging drains. We were also clearing rubbish and derelict machinery which had been left in the barn.
The floors were dug out and the drains completed.
We started clearing a lot of old undergrowth such as brambles and ivy from the exercise area, and pruned a number of trees to a more normal shape.
The very cold weather continued into February which meant some work involving concrete was little delayed.
However the roof specialist confirmed that the original roof was perfectly sound and would not need to be replaced. This is great news as the original not-quite-straight roofline certainly adds to the character! We will just need to insulate underneath.
Radon boxes were fitted below the floor. We are not believed to be in a radon area, but these boxes ensure there could never be any possible radon problems.
The under floor heating installation was completed and the fitting of new floors started.
The new wood windows (also from a local craftsman) have arrived and we are starting to fit them as well.
The slate floors downstairs are in place along with all interior walls.
The new wood windows have been installed.
The existing wood beams have been sanded down and treated ready for varnishing.
The bases for the patios have been laid.
Landscaping of the field has started.

The decorating is complete in the bedrooms and well underway elsewhere.
